“Set your heart upon your work but never its reward.”
Kamsa, the merciless king, was happy and relieved at the death of Devaki’s first son, but on the other hand worried too thinking about his fate.
“The eighth son born to Vasudeva and Devaki will become the reason of your end.” The words of the Oracle revolved in his head sending shivers down his spine.
One by one, Kamsa immediately destroyed every child of Devaki, as soon as they took birth. He killed all the six children born to Devaki, mercilessly in the same manner. Devaki pleaded him, but the tyrannical king who imprisoned and overthrew his own father to become the ruler; how could he spare his sister’s children even after knowing that they will become the reason of his death?
Anantadeva (Balarama) appeared first in Devaki’s womb as her seventh pregnancy. Devaki didn’t want to imagine what would happen to her child but whenever she thought about Kamsa, she wailed remembering all her children who were murdered cruelly by her brother. She knew that her brother would not leave this child too and would kill her baby with his murderous thoughts. She couldn’t stand the pain anymore, she prayed to god to save her child.
At night, the child was miraculously transferred from Devaki’s womb to that of Rohini, a wife of Nanda Maharaja in Gokul.
Next day, the guards ran to Kamsa to give the news about Devaki’s new born baby.
“Sir, Devaki’s new born baby is stillborn.”
The guards told Kamsa which was enough to put a huge wide smile on Kamsa’s face. He was happy hearing the news, and on the other hand, Devaki was crying upon the death of her child.
But she didn’t know that god fulfilled her wish.
“God surely listens, understands and knows the hopes and fears you keep in your heart. For when you trust in his love, miracles happen!”
