Under the Streetlight…

I hate going to school,

They always say, ‘study hard, you fool!’

I will never go back there again,

Can’t tolerate this brain pain.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t want to study anymore,
I said when I shut my room’s door.
Grabbed the phone and went for a walk,
Cursed my fate when stepped over a rock.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Suddenly, something caught my sight

In that biting cold night.

On road sat a boy, younger than me,

For a moment I thought, let it be.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went on, changing the song track,
But I got surprised when I turned back.
He picked up a book and started to write,
He was studying under the streetlight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I approached and asked about him,

And his eyes got filled to the brim.

As a shoe polisher, he worked always,

For his family and to fund his study pays.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I realized what a huge mistake I did,
I learnt a lesson from just a kid.
Life only gives opportunities to some,
For rest, it offers obstacles to overcome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Don’t waste that chance, again it won’t come,

Just think of them, who live in slum.

They always say, ‘study hard, you fool!’

But from now, I hate(d) going to school…

  3. People often take education for granted and then there are others who overwork themselves to have a shot at education. Great poem, it reminded me of a similar situation. Hopefully. the guy under the street light will miraculously finish his education with or without, the street light.

    1. So true,
      I was inspired to write this poem by a social media post in which there was a girl who was studying under the streetlight.
      Glad you liked the poem! There are many children who are not able to get education but with true determination and hard work, they can achieve their goals and get a better life…

      1. I agree. Determination and Hard Work will take you far but they are nothing without core values and a compassionate heart for humankind.. It’s been refreshing to connect with you.

  4. Great poem. It’s always nice to have a reminder of how lucky we truly are. Some people have nothing, yet never even consider giving up on their goals, and those who are lucky enough to have all the resources we could possibly need, give it all up, simply because we think our goals are too difficult to achieve.

  5. This is such a great poem, many times we complain it’s too difficult and we say we hate it because we are afraid when we then see someone working harder than us, not complaining in the most arduous of circumstances it really makes us feel ashamed. Wonderful poem, I loved it :-)!

  6. That was absolutely wonderful!

    A simple story. Something everyone has heard at some point.

    BUT, your verses… they are so simple yet beautiful.

    I would love to write a poem like you do !!
